Tottenham’s Champions League hopes boosted by break

On Tuesday night Tottenham recorded a 2-0 home win against West Ham in the Premier League.

The win boosted their chances of claiming a Champions League spot for next season, as the victory saw Spurs move to within a point of Manchester United who occupy the last Champions League spot in the top-flight. The Red Devils have a game in-hand, though.

Two of the men who played a big part in the win over West Ham were forwards Heung-Min Son and Harry Kane. The pair and Tottenham have benefitted greatly from the enforced break due to COVID-19.

Before the break, both Son and Kane were ruled out for the remainder of the season. However, the three-month break has given them time to recover from their respective injuries and get themselves fit.

This is a major boost to Tottenham’s top-five hopes this season. They may have left it slightly late, but they certainly stand a better chance of qualifying for Europe’s elite competition with the talented attacking pair in the team.

Before the break Spurs looked lacking in the attacking areas, which is why they fell slightly behind the teams in the lucrative Champions League qualification spots.

Without a doubt, any team would suffer if they lost their most dangerous attacking players for any length of time.

Their return makes the race much more interesting and it would be hard to write-off Spurs, even if they still have major competition from several other clubs for a top-five finish.

Jose Mourinho was brought in to move Tottenham forward. They were in 13th place when the Portuguese head coach got the job, so they have moved forward in a sense. However, after so many straight years finishing in the top-four, anything but qualification for the Champions League this season will be a disappointment.
