For the last few transfer windows, Chelsea have not strengthened their squad. Of course, last summer the Blues were banned from making transfers.

However, by the time the January transfer window rolled by the ban was no longer in place.

Head coach Frank Lampard decided against strengthening his squad in the notoriously hard winter window though, instead, keeping any remaining funds for this summer’s window.

The club from south west London then snapped up Ajax playmaker Hakim Ziyech earlier this year for a fee reported to be in the region of £38million. However, they have gone a step further by completing the signing of highly-rated Germany international Timo Werner from RB Leipzig for a fee of around £47.5million.

Werner is one of the best up-and-coming forwards in the European game. The 24-year-old has netted an impressive 26 goals in the Bundesliga this season, a figure bettered in the German top-flight only by Bayern Munich’s master predator Robert Lewandowski.

The forward is certainly an exciting addition to the Blues squad. Lampard’s preference for young players is well-known, which is probably why veterans Pedro and Willian look set to leave the club this summer.

Pedro has reportedly agreed a deal with Roma, while Willian has been linked with several clubs including Barcelona.

From a Chelsea point of view, the pair leaving is not the end of the world, as it seems they are bringing in young and hungry replacements for their ageing stars. Lampard has done well to steer the Blues into the top-four places.

It seems the signings he is making at the minute will keep the team competitive for years to come. If he can add players in other crucial areas of the pitch, then Chelsea are likely to be in a very good position to trouble those teams at the summit of the Premier League.
