Never say die attitude could win Liverpool the title

On Sunday afternoon, Liverpool recorded a tense 2-1 victory over Tottenham at Anfield. The game looked to be heading for a draw until a 90th-minute own goal from Toby Alderweireld gifted the Merseysider’s three points.

The three points could be crucial as they lifted Jurgen Klopp’s team back above reigning champions Manchester City at the top of the table. Liverpool are now two points ahead of Pep Guardiola in a title race that is becoming more and more intense by the week.

Challengers Liverpool do not seem to be giving up the fight easily and one of the key factors in the title race could be their never-say-die attitude, which has resulted in so many crucial late goals this season.

Liverpool have become famous in the Premier League era for scoring late goals. That determination to win has never been more evident than this season. A number of late goals spring to mind that could be vital in their attempts to claim the Premier League title.

Klopp’s side famously recorded a 1-0 win over Merseyside rivals Everton at Anfield courtesy of a 96th-minute winner from Divock Origi after a blunder by goalkeeper Jordan Pickford. There was also a late winner at struggling Fulham to claim a 2-1 victory prior to the international break. Although the effort was not last-gasp, it came in the last ten minutes of the contest.

The latest late winner is one to be added to that list. Spurs goalkeeper Hugo Lloris must take a huge slice of the blame for the goal, despite it going down as an Alderweireld own goal though. If the Reds do clinch the title, then Pickford and Lloris should receive medals for literally giving Klopp’s team a helping hand with their errors.

The Premier League title race is still in Manchester City’s hands, as the Citizens still have a game in hand on the Merseysider’s. However, if Liverpool does win the title then no doubt their mental strength and attribute of never giving up will have played a big part in the triumph.
