Chelsea started the season with the objective of returning to the Premier League top-four this season. Early season form suggested that the Blues might even mount a title challenge under highly regarded Italian boss Maurizio Sarri.

However, the Blues form dipped dramatically and despite a 2-1 win at south west London rivals Fulham on Sunday, Sarri’s team remain outside the Champions League spots. After dominating the first period, the Blues needed goalkeeper Kepa to keep them in the game towards the end of the derby.

The victory was a much-needed one though, as it moved Sarri’s team to within two points of fourth place Manchester United, who have played an extra game than the Blues.

Like any Chelsea boss, Sarri is unlikely to be given much time to turn things around at Stamford Bridge. The clubs owner Roman Abramovich is notoriously trigger-happy when it comes to firing bosses.

There is already speculation that Sarri could leave the club this summer no matter happens. However, if the Blues fail to qualify for the Champions League, then it seems inevitable that the Italian will lose his job. However, if they finish in the top-four, it at least gives the Italian hope of keeping his position with the Blues.

Chelsea next few fixtures look to be very favourable with games against Wolves, Everton, Cardiff and West Ham. None of the quartet is in particularly great form, although the Toffees look to have turned a corner under Portuguese boss Marco Silva after a terrible run of form.

Things have not been a bed of roses for Sarri in his debut campaign at Stamford Bridge. His debut campaign may be his only campaign with the south west London club unless he can inspire the Blues to rediscover their early season form in the near future.
