So many column inches have been written about Tottenham this season and either their failure or perhaps lack of desire in terms of signing new players. However, it was a sub-plot that almost went away after a string of impressive results.
But with injuries to Dele Alli and Harry Kane, it is a subject that has reared its ugly head once more and one that has perhaps been further highlighted because of the fact that both these players were injured during January’s transfer window.
Losing one of these players would be bad enough, although you could perhaps argue that the injury to Alli would not be as harshly felt. However, to lose two of your main attacking options is incredibly unfortunate, perhaps even bordering on bad luck.
Many fans would have felt that the club would have had the perfect opportunity to rectify that situation and go into the market to sign a couple of players, something that would ease the injury crisis that has plagued Tottenham as of late.
Then again if you were a betting man and considered that Tottenham did not spend a penny in the Summer, then it probably comes as no real surprise that there have been no new additions to the first team squad in January.
At the same time though, the overriding question is just who the North London outfit could have signed. January is notoriously difficult time to enter the transfer market as the perceived value is always that little bit lower.
Add to the fact that Daniel Levy prides himself on trying to find value in the market and you can begin to understand just why there would have been an apprehension to buy a player for what would have undoubtedly been an inflated fee.
The reason being is that rival clubs, especially in the English top flight would have smelled the desperation a mile off and would have hiked up the price on their star players accordingly, with Callum Wilson at Bournemouth being a perfect example of this.
And it also begs another question that say if Tottenham did sign Wilson? Although he would have filled the gap left by Harry Kane’s injury in the very short term, he would soon be reduced to a bit part role on the England forward’s return.
Although in fairness this is now something of a moot point, due to the fact that Wilson has recently undergone an operation for a minor knee injury and now looks set to be ruled out for the whole of February.
So maybe there is some form of method in Tottenham’s madness, as frustrating as it may seem for their fans at the moment. However, the frustration will certainly dissipate if the club manage to qualify for next season’s Champions League and secure a top four finish come May.
If they manage to achieve that task then Mauricio Pochettino will have undoubtedly worked wonders over the course another gruelling season, the question then becomes whether he will lead the club into the next one?
