Arsenal recorded a much-needed 2-0 win over Manchester United at the Emirates Stadium on Sunday afternoon to stay in the hunt for a place in next season's Champions League. The win means that Arsene Wenger’s side are still sixth in the table, but are now six points behind fourth-place Manchester City.
The Gunners also have a game in hand of City, which is on Wednesday at Southampton. A win would put the team from north London right back in the race for a Champions League spot this season.
The fixture list looks accommodating for Arsene Wenger’s team on paper. Southampton have little to play for, neither do Stoke, Sunderland or Everton, who are the Gunners last remaining opponents of the campaign.
With none of the top teams facing each other in the remaining league fixtures of the campaign, the likes of Manchester City and third place Liverpool also have what look to be comfortable fixtures for the remainder of the campaign.
The win against United will have lifted spirits of everybody connected with the club. The Gunners produced a decent display, especially in the second half. There is still hope of Wenger’s side keeping up their extraordinary record of qualifying for the Champions League.
All Arsenal can do now is win all their remaining games and hope that either City or Liverpool slip-up in their games. Liverpool have played two more games than Arsenal and have struggled to beat the so called lesser teams, so could still slip-up.
There has been a lot of frustration surrounding the north London club this season. Missing out on the Champions League would just crank up the pressure on much-maligned Gunners boss Arsene Wenger.
If Arsenal did finish in the top-four this season, then the question marks over Wenger’s future may die down a little for a short time anyway.
