Tottenham will have hoped that last weekend would have been pivotal in their Premier League title challenge. Spurs were facing arch-rivals Arsenal in the north London derby, while title rivals Chelsea faced a potentially tough trip to Everton.
The gap could have potentially been cut down to just a point if both results went in favour of the north London club.
In the end, Chelsea recorded a comfortable 3-0 win over a lacklustre Everton, who had already sealed seventh place and a Europa League spot. Spurs did their bit by beating neighbours Arsenal 2-0 at White Hart Lane.
Nothing much changed in the title race by the end of the weekend, except for the fact that Chelsea had negotiated their toughest challenge left this season by winning at Goodison Park. The gap at the top remains six points, but there are now just four games left this season.
For a second consecutive campaign, it looks like the Premier League title is just beyond Mauricio Pochettino’s side. Everybody at the club are saying the rights things at the moment, but they will know that the title may just beyond their reach this season.
Pochettino certainly seems to be building a very strong young team in north London. Next season they could come back even stronger, especially if their Argentinian boss is given backing in the transfer market to bring in new faces.
Tottenham have been so consistent for the last few months and have pushed Chelsea down to the wire in the title race. The likes of Dele Alli, Christian Eriksen and Harry Kane look to have developed into even better players.
There could still be a twist in the Premier League title tale. However, that looks unlikely and Tottenham may have to console themselves with second place this season.
