Everton can win ugly under Ronald Koeman

Everton have made a solid start to life under new boss Ronald Koeman, picking up three points from a possible nine in the Premier League. On Saturday the Toffees recorded a 1-0 home in against Stoke City at Goodison Park.

The only goal of the game arrived just after half-time, as Leighton Baines’ penalty kick hit the post and rebounded off the back of Shay Given’s head to give the Toffees the lead. The goal may have been fortunate, but the side Merseyside had the better of the game in possession and attempts on goal.

One of the more impressive facets of Everton’s performance was the fact that they produced a dogged defence resolve to preserve their narrow lead. In the end, they won the game ugly style but still collected maximum points.

The Toffees had a few scary moments at the back with Marko Arnautovic hitting the woodwork and Leighton Baines clearing with the rebound, but overall their defensive display was pretty solid.

One performance that epitomised this new-found defensive resolve was that of centre-back Ashley Williams. The Wales captain was making his Everton Premier League debut and he was as solid as always.

Under former boss Roberto Martinez, Everton would probably have drawn this game. However, Koeman made some sensible substitutions that helped the Toffees hold on to the maximum points.

The Dutchman’s tactical acumen and training methods are already having an effect on the players. The team is starting to look fitter and stronger than last season. Everton fans will now feel that their team can defend a lead under Koeman, unlike last season.
