Given what happened to Christian Eriksen last summer, the fact that he is playing any form of football is a miracle in itself. But now the 30-year-old is back in the Denmark squad.

Eriksen suffered a cardiac arrest while playing for Denmark against Finland at Euro 2020. Nine months on, he has been called-up for international duty.

The Danes play a friendly in the Netherlands later this month before hosting Serbia. If everything goes to plan, Eriksen will make an emotional return to the international stage.

The midfielder was fitted with an implanted cardioverter-defibrillator (ICD) following his cardiac arrest. Due to Serie A regulations, that meant he could no longer player for Inter Milan.

In January, he joined Premier League side Brentford on a sixth-month deal and has wasted no time in reminding everyone of his undeniable talent.

Eriksen made his debut for the Bees against Newcastle last month, coming onto the field as a second-half substitute. He has since started each of the previous two games, helping his team to secure back-to-back wins.

After playing the full 90 minutes in the 3-1 victory over Norwich, he played a key role in Brentford’s 2-0 win against Burnley last weekend – providing an assist for Ivan Toney’s opener.

Eriksen has racked up more than 500 senior appearances across his career. After making a name for himself at Ajax, where he bagged 32 foals and 65 assists in 163 games, he signed for Tottenham in 2013.

He stayed in North London until 2020, chalking up 69 goals and 90 assists in 305 appearances for Spurs. He then moved to Inter Milan and helped them to secure the scudetto in 2021.

Let’s not forget that Eriksen also has 109 international caps under his belt. The gifted playmaker has notched 36 goals and 25 assists for his country.

When Eriksen collapsed at Euro 2020, the chances of him playing football again were almost non-existent. However, he has bounced back in spectacular style.

One can only imagine Eriksen’s emotions when he received his international re-call. Now, the Danish legend will have his sights set on making the World Cup squad for Qatar 2022.
