Everton’s search for a new boss is a fascinating one

As expected, Everton dispensed with the services of head coach Rafa Benitez after a woeful 2-1 defeat at bottom of the table Norwich on Saturday.

His whole spell at the club was ill-fated from the start, largely due to his links to Liverpool.

However, it was not his links to the Toffees city rivals that earned Benitez his P45, it was his baffling tactics and poor substitutions that saw the Merseyside club act.

A record of one win in 13 Premier League games says it all about his short spell in charge at Goodison Park.

Now the Toffees hierarchy must find a successful managerial solution, which they failed to do in the summer.

Reportedly, Everton have or are set to interview former England duo Wayne Rooney and Frank Lampard for the vacancy.

The pair are believed to be the favourites for the job, with the likes of Jose Mourinho and Niko Kovac also rumoured to be on the club’s wanted list.

In terms of picking the new head coach, it is difficult to know who is making the selection. The Toffees have recently parted company with director of football Marcel Brands.

Even when he was at the club there were questions about how much say he had in what went on in the club.

Reports suggest majority shareholder Farhad Moshiri and long-term chairman Bill Kenwright seem to be on completely different pages when it comes to the teams next head coach.

It has been suggested that Benitez was Moshiri’s appointment. Therefore, the next appointment may well be made by Kenwright, simply because the Spaniard’s reign was a complete failure.

It will be intriguing to see whether the Toffees next managerial appointment is a success. For now, interim boss Duncan Ferguson looks likely to oversee Saturday’s game against Aston Villa.

Who knows maybe the Scot is the man to lead the team on a more permanent basis?
