Move to Roma could be the making of Abraham’s career

Move to Roma could be the making of Abraham’s career

On Wednesday, Tammy Abraham completed a £34m move from Chelsea to Italian club Roma. The move was not a surprise, as the striker was eager to play first-team football and it seemed unlikely he would get that in south west London.

The return of Romelu Lukaku from Italian champions Inter was the final nail in the coffin of Abraham’s Chelsea career.

It has always been a struggle for the 23-year-old to convince those at Chelsea that he was good enough to be the team’s first-choice striker long-term.

The signings of German forward pair Timo Werner and Kai Havertz last summer pushed him down the striking pecking order.

However, the strange thing is that Abraham has always scored goals when given the chance. Last season despite not being in favour for much of the campaign, Abraham still finished as the Blues joint-top goalscorer in the Premier League with 12 goals.

The season before he scored 17 top-flight goals to help the Blues to a top-four finish under Frank Lampard.

Abraham has already shown he can score goals on a regular basis. He just needed somewhere to play regular football, though. The switch to Roma looks like a shrewd one if he can adapt to the style of play.

He should be a first-team regular and at 23, he will only get better with experience. Chelsea have covered themselves too by inserting a buy-back clause of around £68m.

If he thrives and does start fulfilling his potential, then the Blues have an easy way of re-signing the forward.

On paper, this move makes sense for everybody involved. However, the biggest benefactor from the switch has to be Abraham himself, as he now has the chance to continue his development on an upward trajectory.
