Will Harry Kane come to life at Euro 2020?

It’s safe to say that there was plenty of hype around Harry Kane heading into the European Championship, but the England captain has so far failed to live up to expectations.

With Manchester City reportedly preparing a £100 million big for the Tottenham Hotspur striker, should he be doing better at Euro 2020? Or are his best performances yet to come?

Let’s assess Kane’s Euros campaign up to now, analyze his previous season with Spurs and discuss whether or not he can find his feet this summer.

    • What has Kane done at Euro 2020 so far?

As you would expect, Kane has started each of England’s three group games at Euro 2020. However, he was subbed off in the opening two matches against Croatia and Scotland.

The 27-year-old played the full 90 minutes against the Czech Republic on Tuesday and also managed his first shot on target of the tournament. But he has been starved of goalscoring opportunities.

In total, Kane has accumulated 246 minutes of playing time at Euro 2020. He rarely goes that long without finding the back of the net.

    • How did Kane fare for Spurs last season?

Kane enjoyed a phenomenal 2020/21 campaign for Tottenham, bagging 33 goals and 17 assists in 49 appearances in all competitions.

Not only did he clinched the Premier League Golden Boot (his third in eight years), but he was also named Premier League Playmaker of the Season for his troubles.

Overall, the prolific marksman has netted 221 goals in 336 matches for Spurs. When you consider that those numbers, he is undoubtedly underperforming at Euro 2020.

    • Can Kane fire England to Euro 2020 glory?

It is difficult to explain exactly why Kane has yet to open his account at the European Championship, especially as his international record stands at 34 goals in 57 games.

Many believe that he is not at full fitness and is struggling to get up to speed following a taxing and relentless domestic campaign with Tottenham

It could also be argued that Kane doesn’t fit Gareth Southgate’s system. He drops deep for Spurs to great effect, but his unselfish play doesn’t seem to be working at Euro 2020.

If Kane’s struggles in front of goal continue, the Three Lions will almost certainly struggle to get past the stronger sides in the competition and could make an early exit.
