There has been confusion recently regarding the staging of the 2021 Copa America and at the time of writing Brazil are hosting the tournament.

However, the groups are remaining the same and competing in Group A, known as the South Zone, we have Chile.

The top four teams progress to the knockout stages and Chile will be believe they have what it takes to be one of those four nations.

    2019 Copa America

Chile were drawn in Group C of the 2019 Copa America and finished second in the group behind Uruguay. Chile won two of their three matches, recording a comprehensive 4-0 win over Japan and a 2-1 victory over Ecuador.

Chile lost their final match of the group 1-0 to Uruguay but progressed to the knockout stages.

Having been held to a 0-0 draw by Colombia in the quarter-final, Chile went through via a penalty shootout but suffered a shock 3-0 defeat at the hands of Peru in the semi-final.

Chile have enjoyed good recent success in the Copa America having won two of the last three tournaments. They have progressed from the group stage in each of the last five events and have reached the quarter-final or better since 2007.

Chile are joint fifth in terms of the most successful nations in the history of the competition, level with Peru on two wins, both of which have come since 2015.

    Key Players

Chile are coached by former Deportivo La Coruna player Martin Lasarte. He has managed teams throughout South America plus Real Sociedad in Spain.

Lasarte was appointed coach of Chile in 2021 and has had little time to stamp his authority on the team. However, having played only two games with Chile, Lasarte is undefeated as coach.

Despite suffering at club level following his move to Manchester United from arsenal, Alexis Sanchez remains a key player for Chile.

Sanchez enjoyed a decent season with Inter Milan but regular playing time was limited at the San Siro. Sanchez has 46 goals to his name, making him the top goal scorer in the Chile squad for the 2021 Copa America.

The experienced forward will be joined by Eduardo Vargas in attack, who has a superior strike rate to Sanchez for his country.

There is plenty of experience in the Chile squad including Claudio Bravo, Gary Medel, Jean Beausejour, Charles Aránguiz, Luis Jiménez, and Fabián Orellana.

In terms of youngsters, Carlos Palacios is one to watch having made his debut for Chile in 2020. The attacking midfielder currently plays for Internacional in Brazil and could be the next big thing in Chilean football.

    Chances

Chile have an excellent recent record in the Copa America but have been struggling in 2022 World Cup qualifying. At the time of writing, they have recorded just a single victory from five matches but remain in touch with the likes of Paraguay and Uruguay.

Their first three group games include Argentina and Uruguay and the results in those matches will set the tone for the tournament. Chile can progress from this group but it may be a quarter-final exit.
