The glory days of Paolo Di Canio and Benito Carbone must seem like an age ago for Owls fans.
In fact, it’s nearly 30 years since Sheffield Wednesday last played in the Premier League and the club has even spent seasons in the third-tier in that time.
Wednesday recorded back-to-back play-off loses from 2015 to 2017 but have since registered consecutive mid-table finishes.
Can this be the season that the club finally returns to the top-flight?
Sheff Wednesday struggled to find any consistency throughout the 2018/19 campaign and finished the season in 12th place.
While they may have lost fewer games than many other sides in the division, they drew 16 matches; the fourth highest draw tally of all the Championship clubs.
Jos Luhukay began the season as the Owls’ manager but only lasted until December following a poor run of results.
Steve Bruce was appointed as Luhukay’s successor however Bruce also parted ways with the club at the end of the season to join Premier League side Newcastle United.
Lee Bullen is in his third spell as caretaker manager of the club and it is unclear whether or not he will be given the job on a permanent basis.
The uncertainly surrounding the managerial situation, coupled with a transfer embargo, could make it tough for the team to settle this season.
Wednesday are under a ‘soft transfer embargo’ after failing to deliver their accounts on time.
This doesn’t mean that they cannot sign players all together, however the club is unable to register players with the restrictions in place unless any deal is given dispensation by the Football League.
This make it extremely difficult for the Owls to do business in the transfer window and they are in need of an injection of new players to boost the squad.
The club’s top scorer last season – Steven Fletcher – managed just 11 goals and Wednesday must find more goals this term in order finish above mid-table.
Wednesday ended the previous campaign with three wins, three draws and three loses from their final nine matches.
They must be more consistent this time around to be in with a shout of securing a play-off place.
The predicted league finish for Sheffield Wednesday is 12th. Another mid-table finish is expected for the Owls.
