Can Brann upset overtake Bodo/Glimt in the Norwegian Eliteserien title race?

With 13 games gone in the Norwegian Eliteserien, Brann are level on points with reigning champions Bodoe/Glimt in the title race.

Having not won the title in nearly 20 years, Brann are battling for a trophy that eluded them in 2023 by nine points.

Could this season be different for Brann? For starters, the Reds have 27 points from 13 games ahead of this weekend’s matches. The team has suffered defeat on just two occasions in the Eliteserien.

Brann head into the weekend on a two-match winning streak and have the chance to go top of the table, depending on Bodoe/Glimt’s result, with a win or draw.

This weekend’s fixture against Stroemsgodset is vital in the title race. Why? Because a top of the table showdown with Bodoe/Glimt is on the horizon.

The title rivals will face off on July 7 in a match that could ultimately settle the Eliteserien title race.

Although the gap between the top two and third place is just five points, Bodoe/Glimt and Brann are expected to be the two to continue the title fight until the end of the campaign.

July 7’s match between Brann and Bodoe/Glimt is even more important for the former due to the number of matches they have already played.

Brann have completed 13 matches compared to Bodoe/Glimt’s 12.

Bodoe/Glimt lead the league in goals scored with 25. Only Molde have equalled that tally. The Lightning also have the Eliteserien’s best defence, conceding just eight times.

While Brann have scored 22 goals, they have allowed 13 goals. Although it isn’t a terrible figure, it is one that shows the Reds’ tendency to allow goals. Each of Brann’s last five matches in the league saw over 2.5 goals and both teams score.

Bodoe/Glimt, on the other hand, kept clean sheets in two of their last five fixtures. The old cliche says, ‘defence wins titles’, and that could be true of this season’s Eliteserien.

Since 1999, Brann and Bodoe/Glimt have met 36 times in all competitions. Bodoe/Glimt hold the edge with a record of 17W-6D-13L.

But Brann’s confidence should be high going up against the reigning champions. They took points in each of the last three games. That run of matches included a 4-2 win last season at Bodoe/Glimt’s Aspmyra Stadion.

The Eliteserien title could hinge on the big showdown between the title rivals on July 7.

However, last season, Brann showed that taking points off Bodoe/Glimt didn’t exactly result in winning the title. Could this season be different?
