What a weekend we have in store in La Liga and the Bundesliga, as first takes on second across the top two divisions.

Bayer Leverkusen will aim to go five points clear of Bayern Munich on Saturday, just as Real Madrid look to do the same to Girona.

Let’s look at other famous clashes down the years between first and second in these divisions.

    Real Madrid 2-6 Barcelona (2009)

More often than not, Barcelona and Real Madrid play out the top two spots in La Liga. Given that the season is a 38-game campaign, there are not that many clashes down the years that have seen an El Clasico result swing the league title one way. However, this one did.

There were just five games left after Barcelona drew 2-2 with Valencia, which allowed Real to get to within four points. Real could now cut the gap to one and head into the final three games with an almighty chance to steal the crown.

However, braces from Thierry Henry and Lionel Messi alongside a finish each from Carlos Puyol and Gerard Pique put one hand on the title for Barcelona.

    Atletico Madrid 1-1 Barcelona (2014)

With Real and Barcelona often occupying the top two spots, Atletico Madrid tend to finish third or fourth. However, back in 2013/14 the Colchoneros broke the El Clasico stranglehold on La Liga and won their first title in 18 years after a draw with Barcelona on the final day.

Barcelona were at home, and despite Atletico leading for most of the season, the Catalan giants were expected to win, given how it was at the Nou Camp. This would have put Barcelona first on only goals difference.

Things were going according to plan when Alexis Sanchez scored, but a finish from Diego Godin sent the title to Madrid after a 1-1 draw

Borussia Dortmund 1-0 Bayern Munich (2012)

Borussia Dortmund are the only team to win the title off Bayern Munich since the turn of 2010. One of those league titles came in 2011/12, and BVB got one hand on the trophy with a 1-0 win in April of that season.

Dortmund were clear of Bayern by six points already, and one win more would put them on nine with just five games left. Soon-to-be Bayern legend, Robert Lewandowski was the hero that day with the game’s only goal, as Dortmund won the league by eight points in the end.

    Wolfsburg 5-1 Bayern Munich (2009)

Wolfsburg won their first and only ever Bundesliga title back in 2008/09 in what remains one of the Bundesliga's greatest-ever triumphs.

Wolfsburg were level with Bayern Munich at the top of the table ahead of this gameweek, but a stunning 5-1 thrashing saw the Wolves move into first and Bayern drop all the way into fourth after Hamburger and Hertha Berlin won their games.

Two goals each from Edin Dzeko and Grafite and a goal from Christian Genter sealed the deal for Wolfsburg that day.
