Jose Mourinho has departed his fifth managerial job within the past 11 years after facing the sack from Roma.

This now means the two-time Champions League winner has been sacked by Chelsea, Real Madrid, Manchester United and Tottenham Hotspur and Roma since 2013.

Let’s take a look at what’s next for him.

    The Bundesliga

Besides Ligue 1, the Bundesliga is the only top five European league Mourinho has not managed in.

There is unlikely to be any motivation for a manager of his calibre to manage a team other than Paris Saint-Germain in France, due to lack of competitiveness outside of the French capital.

This leaves open the Bundesliga for Mourinho, but once again, there is not much room to choose a top team.

Thomas Tuchel is doing well at Bayern Munich and Xabi Alonso has been arguably the continent’s best manager this season with Bayer Leverkusen.

In truth, the only notable route into a managerial job right now for the ex-Chelsea boss could be Borussia Dortmund.

Despite losing the Bundesliga title on goals difference on the final day to Bayern, Edin Terzić is down in fifth right now with BVB. With Mourinho available, the club could take a look at him instead.

    International Football

Mourinho has long been linked to international jobs down the years, most notably with his home nation of Portugal and with the England national team, due to his links to that country and teams and players within it.

With Euro 2024 a matter of months away, however, it’s unlikely we will see the former Madrid boss move into a spot at the helm of one of the teams entering the finals this summer’s, unless something drastic were to happen.

Ultimately, England are more than content with Gareth Southgate after reaching the final three years ago, while Portugal racked up the best record throughout qualification process and have no reason to get rid of Roberto Martínez after 10 wins from 10 games.

Spain, Germany, Italy, the Netherlands and Belgium have also all hired new managers within the past 12 months, so there is seemingly no room for Mourinho to enter an elite national team right now.

A Return to the Premier League?

Although no team in the Premier League top six is seeking a manager right now, some of the Champions League hopefuls are not in good form.

Two of Mourinho’s former Premier League sides, Chelsea and United, are in dire straits this season and looking like facing another year without Champions League football.

The poor form shown by Maurico Pochettino at Chelsea and Erik ten Hag over at Old Trafford might force those two clubs to take action and get the Portuguese back on their books.
