With Ajax struggling last season, PSV Eindhoven were hoping to take advantage and win their first Eredivisie title since 2018.

However, they were beaten to the top by Feyenoord and forced to settle for second place. However, with Ajax disappointing again this season, PSV look well placed to make the most of their chance and win the Dutch title.

In fact, given the form of PSV, even if Ajax were competing at the top, Peter Bosz’s team would still take some stopping.

As things stand after 17 matches played in the Eredivisie, PSV are top of the table on 51 points.

They have won all 17 of their league fixtures this season, which is an incredible record.

Feyenoord have lost only 2 league games this season yet find themselves 12 points behind PSV, such has been the form of the Rood-Witten.

There were concerns for PSV following the departure of central midfielder Ibrahim Sangaré to Nottingham Forest in England.

However, they spent their money wisely and have added Hirving Lozano, Noa Lang, Jerdy Schouten, and Ricardo Pepi using the funds gained from the departure of Sangaré to the Premier League.

All four of the additions have had a significant impact for PSV, with Lozano, Lang, and Pepi all contributing with goals and assists.

However, the one player PSV will want to keep fit is striker Luuk de Jong.

The experienced Dutch international has scored 15 goals in the Eredivisie this season, which is already 1 goal more than the whole of the previous campaign.

Only Santiago Giménez of Feyenoord and Vangelis Pavlidis of AZ have scored more goals in the league this season than De Jong.

If he can keep scoring at his current rate, De Jong could come close to his tally of 34 goals for PSV in the 2018/19 season, which earned him a move to Sevilla.

In addition to their goal scoring exploits, the PSV defence has been exceptional this season.

The goal they conceded against Excelsior on their return to league action on the 13th of January was only the 7th goal PSV have conceded in 17 Eredivisie matches this season.

No other team can come close to this statistic, with Feyenoord and AZ closest having both conceded 16 goals.

We must go back to the 1987/1988 season when PSV were under the guidance of Guus Hiddink to find the last time PSV won their opening 17 league fixtures of the season.

PSV will set a new record of successive wins if they can beat FC Utrecht away on the 21st of January.

There could be some interest from other clubs in the likes of Johan Bakayoko, Jordan Teze, and Joey Veerman in the January transfer window.

If PSV can keep hold of their key players, this could be a record breaking season in many ways for the club.
