Basel Looking at Their Worst-Ever Top Flight Season in Their 130-Year History

Basel Looking at Their Worst-Ever Top Flight Season in Their 130-Year History

Despite a victory during the week pushing Basel a little further away from last place in the Swiss Super League, the giants of Switzerland are so far experiencing their worst-ever season in the Swiss top flight since the change to the Swiss Super League in 2004.

While a lot of gargantuan clubs in their respective countries continue to struggle this season, such as Chelsea in the Premier League and Lyon in Ligue 1, no team out there in this regard is doing worse than Basel.

In fact, they are down in 11th, meaning they are only off bottom place by four points.

Thankfully for them in the long run, Stade Lausanne-Ouchy are in much worse form, while only one team can get relegated out of the Swiss Super League.

Things were also bad for Basel last season, as they finished in fifth, which was the club's lowest since the Nationalliga A days where they finished fifth once more.

However, since that fifth-placed finish in 2000/01, Basel have gone on to win 12 league titles, although they are without a Super League triumph since way back in 2016/17 where they lost just two games.

So far this campaign, Basel have lost nine times, which is the same amount of wins the league leaders Young Boys have.

Worse yet, they've won just four matche and let in a dreadful record of 32 goals from the 16 matches.

Basel have netted 22 goals as well, and only Lausanne-Ouchy have scored less.

The midweek win over Lugano has put them further away from Lausanne-Ouchy, but incredibly, they drew 1-1 with them last weekend, even with Lausanne-Ouchy having 10 men for the last 20 minutes of the game and after Basel led after just two minutes.

As a result of them finishing fifth last season, there is no European football for a chance for Basel, so there are also no excuses there.

The only major hope in salvaging something out of this dreadful season is the form in the Swiss Cup, as a 1-0 away win over Kriens in the round of 16 and an 8-0 battering over Bosporus and an 8-1 hammering of Saint-Blaise in rounds before that now put them in the quarter-finals against Lugano.

Basel are now sitting seven points behind the championship round in the Super League, and unless they can turn form around rapidly, this could end up going down as their worst-ever season since entering competitive football in 1898–99.
