Liverpool are the only team to defeat Newcastle in the league this season. The Reds claimed a 2-1 win thanks to a Fabio Carvalho goal deep in second-half stoppage-time. Had Carvalho not scored, the game would have finished 1-1.
Newcastle are fourth in the standings ahead of Saturday’s game with Liverpool at St James’ Park. Tottenham Hotspur are just three points behind Newcastle going into matchday 24. Newcastle’s large number of draws and dropped points have allowed Spurs to stay close in the race for the top four.
Liverpool are ninth ahead of the weekend and just three points off the top six. Nine points separate Liverpool and Newcastle in the race for the final Champions League qualification place.
