The Clássico Majestoso is the name given to the football match between Brazilian clubs Corinthians and São Paulo FC. Translated to English, it means the Majestic Derby and both teams are based in the state of São Paulo.

Corinthians play their home matches at the Neo Química Arena and it takes just 45 minutes to travel from there to the Morumbi, home of São Paulo. The rivalry between Corinthians and São Paulo is one of the fiercest in South American football.

The first meeting between Corinthians and São Paulo took place on the 25th of May 1930. The game was played in the Campeonato Paulista Série A and it was Corinthians who came out on top, winning the match 2-1.

Prior to their meeting in the 2023 Paulista, the most recent fixture between the two teams was also in the Campeonato Paulista Série A and the match finished 1-1 in September 2022.

If we look at the overall record between Corinthians and São Paulo, the teams have met 354 times in various competitions. Corinthians lead the way with 131 victories while São Paulo have 109 wins to their name.

That leaves São Paulo with a lot of catching up to do and even if they win the next 20 fixtures against Corinthians, they would still not match the number of wins achieved by their rivals.

There have been a total of 114 draws and in terms of goals scored, there is not much in it, with Corinthians having scored 502 goals and São Paulo scored 476 goals.

Looking at the titles won by the teams, Corinthians just edge it as they have 7 Brazilian Championships to their name in comparison to 6 for São Paulo. Interestingly, São Paulo have never won the Brazilian Cup in their history but Corinthians have won it 3 times.

However, when it comes to the Copa Libertadores, the biggest club competition in South America, São Paulo have tasted success 3 times while Corinthians have 1 Libertadores trophy in their cabinet.

Both teams have enjoyed some big victories over the other, with 5 goals being the biggest margin. São Paulo beat Corinthians 6-1 in 1933 but Corinthians returned the favour, winning by the same score in 2015.

In fact, Corinthians have enjoyed a couple of big wins in recent years, including a 5-0 success in 2011. In November 2016, São Paulo beat Corinthians 4-0 and that is their most recent major success in the Clássico Majestoso.

It is difficult to produce exact statistics in terms of top scorers in the Clássico Majestoso but Teleco was prolific in the 1930s and 40s for Corinthians while São Paulo could rely on Teixeirinha in the 40s and 50s plus Dino Sani in the late 50s and early 60s.

Interestingly, in the derby of March 2005, goalkeeper Rogério Ceni, who regularly took penalties and free-kicks, scored in a 5-1 win for São Paulo and he is the only goalkeeper to score a goal in the history of the Clássico Majestoso.
