Ahead of the 2023 Supercoppa Italiana between Milan and Inter, we take a deep dive into everything there is to know about the Italian Super Cup.

Inaugurated in 1988, the Supercoppa Italiana is an annual match contested by the Serie A champions and the Coppa Italia winners from the previous season.

If the same team wins both the Serie A and Coppa Italia titles in the previous campaign, the Supercoppa is contested by the Serie A champions and the Coppa Italia runners-up.

The match used to act as a pre-season curtain-raiser for the upcoming campaign, but it is now played during the winter and is often staged outside of Italy.

Previous Suppercopas have been played in countries such as the United States, Libya, China, Qatar and Saudia Arabia. This year, the match will return to Saudia Arabia’s King Fahd International Stadium.

Juventus have both won and featured in the most Supercoppa Italianas, winning nine of their 17 appearances. The Turin outfit clinched their first title in 1995, with their most recent success coming in 2020.

Milan are the next most successful club, having claimed seven titles over the years. The Rossoneri have also lost for Supercoppas, with their most recent failure coming in 2018.

Reigning champions Inter have won six titles, while Lazio have won five. Roma and Napoli are the only other clubs to have clinched multiple Supercoppas, having both won the match on two occasions.

Three teams have won the Supercoppa Italiana once – Sampdoria (1991), Fiorentina (1996) and Parma (1999). Meanwhile, two sides have made one appearance and lost – Torino (1993) and Vicenza (1997).

24 of the 34 Supercoppas have been won by the reigning Serie A champions, while the Coppa Italia winners have triumphed eight times. The Coppa Italia runners-up have also won twice.

Paulo Dybala is the top scorer in Supercoppa history, having netted four goals in six appearances. Alessandro Del Piero, Samuel Eto’o, Andriy Shevchenko and Carlos Tevez have all scored three goals in the fixture.

This year’s Supercoppa Italiana will see Milan and Inter battle it out for the silverware. The only previous Supercoppa meeting between the cross-city rivals came back in 2011, with Milan winning 2-1 in Beijing, China.

Can Milan move to withing one title of Juventus this year? Or will Inter move level with Milan on seven Supercoppa crowns? All will be revealed in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, on Wednesday, January 18.
