Spain’s Segunda Division is low on goals in 2022-23

Spain’s Segunda Division is not the most attractive, free-flowing football division in Europe. The league is low on attacking talent and high on defensive tactics, leading to games being low scoring in 2022-23.

The Spanish second division will move into round No 20 this weekend. Games in the Segunda are on average 1.95 goals.

The most common scoreline after 19 rounds of games is 1-0 to the home team. The league saw 17.22% of fixtures end with 1-0 home victories.

Sixty-six per cent of matches in the league this season finished with under 2.5 goals scored. Yes, two-thirds of games in the league have ended with fewer than 2.5 goals scored. Meanwhile, 58% of matches in the Segunda finished with both teams not scoring goals.

Round No 19 of the Segunda featured 11 matches in midweek. Eight of the 11 fixtures featured under 2.5 goals. Seven games saw both teams not score goals.

So, what does this information tell us? For one, it reaffirms the Segunda’s low-scoring nature. It also leads us to believe wagering on under 2.5 goals will be successful more times than not.

Which teams are the Segunda’s lowest scoring? The newly-promoted Racing Santander are the league’s worst in terms of goals. Just nine goals in 19 games were scored by Racing. Real Oviedo tallied the second-fewest goals after 19 games. Oviedo bagged 12 goals.

Burgos have the league’s best defence, allowing just nine goals to opponents across 19 games. Las Palmas allowed 10 goals in their opening 19 games.

It makes sense that both Las Palmas and Burgos are battling for the league title currently. Burgos allow just 0.47 goals a game.

The league’s highest scoring team is Granada, Eibar, and Cartagena, with 23 goals after 19 games. Although the trio of teams are the league’s highest scorers, they average just 1.21 goals per game.

The three teams are the best in the Segunda in front of goal but they are the best in a league full of poor attacking teams.

Yet, draws are common in the league as well. Thirty-two per cent of Segunda games ended in draws after 19 rounds. Halftime draws occurred 57% of the time during the opening 19 matchdays.
