2022 World Cup Preview – Group H Insight

2022 World Cup Preview – Group H Insight
    17/11/22 1912

Last but not least, Group H features Portugal, Uruguay, South Korea and Ghana. Group H contains an exciting mix of teams, with nations from Europe, South America, Asia and Africa set to do battle. We take a look at all four sides.

    Portugal

    • 2018 World Cup: Round of 16
    • Best World Cup Performance: Semi-Finals (1996, 2006)
    • Manager: Fernando Santos
    • FIFA World Ranking: #9

Naturally, all eyes will be on Cristiano Ronaldo in Qatar. Football’s all-time leading goalscorer has netted 117 goals in 191 appearances for his country and will be desperate to enhance his tally in what is likely to be his last World Cup.

That said, Portugal is not a one-man team. With superstars like Rafael Leao, Joao Felix, Bernardo Silva, Ruben Dias and Joao Cancelo also in their ranks, the Euro 2016 champions will be confident of going all the way this year.

    Uruguay

    • 2018 World Cup: Quarter-Finals
    • Best World Cup Performance: Winners (1930, 1950)
    • Manager: Diego Alonso
    • FIFA World Ranking: #14

Like Portugal, Uruguay’s squad is stacked with attacking talent. The veteran duo of Luis Suarez and Edinson Cavani will be joined by Liverpool young gun Darwin Nunez in Qatar, as well as Real Madrid’s Federico Valverde.

Uruguay won the inaugural World Cup all the way back in 1930 before triumphing again in 1950. Since then, they have reached the semi-finals on three occasions – most recently in 2010. Don’t be surprised to see them in the knockouts in Qatar.

    South Korea

    • 2018 World Cup: Group Stage
    • Best World Cup Performance: Semi-Finals (2002)
    • Manager: Paulo Bento
    • FIFA World Ranking: #28

South Korea have featured at each of the previous nine World Cups and even managed to reach the semi-finals on home soil back in 2002. However, they failed to progress from their group in 2014 and 2018.

It goes without saying that Son Heung-min holds the key to South Korea’s chances of success. The Tottenham Hotspur star has scored 35 goals in 104 international appearances, cementing his status as the country’s best-ever player.

    Ghana

    • 2018 World Cup: N/A
    • Best World Cup Performance: Quarter-Finals (2010)
    • Manager: Otto Addo
    • FIFA World Ranking: #61

It’s fair to say that Ghana have endured a disappointing year. After failing to win any of their games at the Africa Cup of Nations, the Black Stars suffered defeats to Japan, Qatar and Brazil – conceding nine goals in the process.

Ghana featured at three consecutive World Cups between 2006 and 2014 but failed to qualify for Russia 2018. Thomas Partey, Inaki Williams and the legendary Ayew brothers will aim to take their country as far as possible this time around.

    Forebet’s Group H Prediction

    2. Portugal
    3. Ghana
    4. South Korea
