Matchday 1 of the 2022-23 Premier League season is in the books. Accordingly, it’s time to assess all the standout statistics and trends from the opening round of fixtures.
As you probably know, Erling Haaland bagged a brace on his Premier League debut. Aleksandar Mitrovic also netted a double as newly-promoted Fulham held Liverpool at Craven Cottage.

Before we dive into the key facts and figures from Matchday 1, let’s take a look at the results from the opening weekend.
Crystal Palace and Arsenal kicked things off on Friday, with the Gunners claiming all three points at Selhurst Park. Other standout results include Fulham’s 2-2 draw with Liverpool and Tottenham’s 4-1 thrashing of Southampton.
Man City took advantage of Liverpool’s early slip-up with a 2-0 victory at West Ham, wrapping up Matchday 1 on Sunday afternoon. However, things didn’t go plan for the red side of Manchester.
Interestingly, there was an even split of home and away wins across the opening weekend. Bournemouth, Newcastle, Spurs and Leeds triumphed on home soil, while Arsenal, Chelsea, Brighton and Man City won on the road.
There were also two draws, with Fulham holding Liverpool and Brentford coming from behind to draw with Leicester. Following Ivan Toney’s 62nd-minute strike, Josh Dasilva equalised on 86 minutes.
Both teams scored in half of the opening ten games, while over 2.5 goals were also scored in 50% of the clashes. Three games produced over 3.5 goals, with only one matchup – Everton vs. Chelsea – dishing up under 1.5 goals.
It is also worth noting that five teams a kept clean sheet on the opening weekend. Arsenal, Bournemouth, Newcastle, Chelsea, and Man City prevented their respective opponents from scoring.
Standout Players
Three players bagged a brace on Matchday 1 – Erling Haaland, Pascal Gross and Aleksandar Mitrovic. Haaland dominated on his Premier League debut, Gross humiliated Man Utd and Mitrovic impressed against Liverpool.
Elsewhere, three players scored and assisted – Mohamed Salah, Darwin Nunez and Dejan Kulusevski. In total, 21 players found the back of the net on the opening weekend, while 18 players notched an assist.
