The League Cup semi-final between Burton and Manchester City was all over following the first leg but the same cannot be said for the other tie.  Chelsea will meet Tottenham Hotspur at Stamford Bridge on Thursday 24th January for a place in the League Cup final.

The first leg ended 1-0 to Tottenham Hotspur at Wembley and this gives them a single goal advantage for the second leg.  Will the Stamford Bridge crowd help Chelsea get back into the tie or can Spurs finish the job to reach the final?

Chelsea come into this game on the back of a disappointing 2-0 defeat at Arsenal on the weekend. The Blues were second best throughout the match and did not trouble the Arsenal goal, while looking poor at the back.

That result means Chelsea have won just two of their last five games in all competitions, having been held by Southampton and defeated by Spurs in the first leg of this tie.

The loss to Arsenal left many onlookers questioning the approach of Maurizio Sarri.  With no striker in the team, Chelsea did not create as many chances as they would have liked and were left exposed at the back on more than one occasion.

Sarri questioned the motivation of the Chelsea players after the match and it will be interesting to see how they respond.  Trends show Chelsea have won five of their last six home League Cup matches and have remained undefeated across those six games.

Tottenham scored a late winner at Fulham on Sunday to get back to winning ways following the 1-0 defeat at home to Manchester United. The big news to come out of that loss was the injury to Harry Kane and Spurs missed the England striker on the weekend.

However, despite some negativity around the club, Spurs have won four of their last five games in all competitions and have lost just two of their last thirteen.  Trends show they have scored 2 or more goals in four of their last five League Cup matches and they have been winning at half-time and full-time in each of their last three League Cup games.

Away form shows Spurs are undefeated in their last seven, winning each of the last five and have lost just once in their last fifteen on the road.

Looking ahead to the team news and Chelsea are still without Ruben Loftus-Cheek, who has a back injury.  Alvaro Morata is doubtful with a hamstring problem but could be about to leave the club.  Olivier Giroud may play up-front, with Eden Hazard dropping deeper.

Tottenham Hotspur are without Harry Kane, Moussa Sissoko, Lucas Moura and Victor Wanyama due to injury plus Heung-Min Son who is on international duty.

Tottenham Hotspur have a lead to defend but Chelsea will be determined to put on a show following their poor performance at Arsenal.

Away goals do not count double in the event of a draw this season and the game will go to penalties if the teams are level on aggregate at full-time.  Chelsea have the talent to win the game but it will be tough and it would not be a surprise to see a narrow 1 goal home win and a penalty shoot-out.
