Relegation Battle at Craven Cottage

    Relegation Battle at Craven Cottage

Arguably the biggest game of the Premier League on Saturday takes place at Craven Cottage.  Fulham, who are sitting 19th in the league, host Huddersfield who will start the game at the bottom of the table.

This is a huge match for both teams in terms of their chances of survival this season.  Fulham know a win could move them up one place in the Premier League and possibly to within a single point of Cardiff City, who occupy 17th spot.

Huddersfield can land a significant blow to their opponents relegation battle by winning the game and improve their own chances of survival. Its going to be a very intriguing afternoon.

Fulham come into this game having been held to a 1-1 draw at home by fellow Premier League newcomers, Wolverhampton Wanderers.  Having taken the lead in the match, Claudio Ranieri will be disappointed his team did not take maximum points.

Trends show Fulham have failed to win any of their previous six Premier League games and have recorded just a single victory in their last sixteen league matches.  It is a very poor record and this game gives them a good chance of turning a corner in their season.

Fulham have got huge problems defensively and they have kept just a single clean sheet in the Premier League this season. That has got to change if they want to stay up, staring with this match.

Huddersfield went down 3-1 at Manchester United on Boxing Day.  With the Red Devils looking revitalised under Ole Gunnar Solskjaer it was always going to be a tough game and Huddersfield were 3-0 down before netting a consolation goal.

That defeat means Huddersfield have now lost each of their last six Premier League games.  Having picked up 7 points from a possible 9 in November, it appeared Huddersfield were getting on track but they have failed to pick up a single point since the beginning of December.

Trends show Huddersfield cannot stop conceding goals and they have kept only one clean sheet in their last eight Premier League matches.  Away from home, Huddersfield have picked up just one win this season, which came at Wolves.  It is their only away in in their last fourteen away Premier League games and they have lost each of their last three on the road.

Looking ahead to the team news and Fulham are still without the injured Andre Zambo Anguissa who is not expected to return until the New Year.  Every other player is available for Ranieri.

Huddersfield on the other hand have a long injury list.  Aaron Mooy remains the biggest concern and the midfielder is out until February.  He joins Tom Smith, Daniel Williams, Abdelhamid Sabiri and Rajiv van La Parra on the treatment table.

This could be a very anxious game of football, with neither team wanting to make a mistake.  However, it would be a surprise to see both teams keep a clean sheet and there should be goals in a match which could be shaded by the home team.
