Bottom of the Table Scrap at St Mary’s

Bottom of the Table Scrap at St Mary’s

The Premier League can quickly get away from you and Newcastle United find themselves sitting bottom of the table ahead of the tenth round of fixtures this weekend.  There are many matches left in the season but it is surprising how quickly you can get cut adrift at the bottom and both teams will know this as Southampton take on Newcastle.

Southampton start the weekend sitting 16th in the table, just 1 point clear Fulham who are in the relegation zone. Newcastle are bottom of the league with just 2 points to their name and they are still searching for their first win of the season.

Trends show Southampton are in a poor run of form in the Premier League and they have failed to win any of their last five Premier League games.  In fact, the Saints have won just four of their last thirty-four Premier League matches and only one of the nine they have played this season.

Their sole victory came in a 2-0 win at Crystal Palace on the 1st of September and Southampton have lost three and drawn two of their five league games since that win.

Scoring goals has been a real problem for Southampton this season and they have failed to find the back of the net in their last four Premier League games.  They lost 3-0 at Liverpool, 2-0 at Wolves, 3-0 at home to Chelsea and picked up a point in a 0-0 draw at Bournemouth last weekend.

If Southampton fans think they have got it bad spare a though for Newcastle fans who are yet to see their team win in the Premier League this season.  The Magpies make the long trip south having lost seven of their nine league games this season, picking up just two draws.

Trends show Newcastle have lost six of their last seven Premier League games, including each of the last three. Away from home, Newcastle have won just three of their last twenty-three matches in all competitions, which is a poor record.

Newcastle have lost twelve of their last fifteen games in all competitions and have failed to score a goal in each of their last three away Premier League matches.

Team news and Southampton could be without midfielder Mario Lemina who took a knock in the draw with Bournemouth last weekend.  Lemina is the only injury concern for Mark Hughes ahead of this game.

Newcastle travel without Florian Lejeune and Jamie Sterry who are injured.  Salomon Rondon is working his way back to fitness and the striker could play some part in the game while Ciaran Clark is struggling to shake off an injury picked up on international duty.

This could be a low scoring game as both teams have been poor in-front of goal this season.  Do not be surprised to see the game end level and Southampton could pick up their second 0-0 draw in succession.
