Promotion and Relegation on the Line in League One

Promotion and Relegation on the Line in League One

Club football does not stop this week and there are some vital fixtures in the lower leagues of English football as clubs aim to win promotion and avoid the dreaded drop.

On Tuesday night there is a huge clash in League One as Northampton Town host Shrewsbury Town at Sixfields Stadium.

Northampton desperately need the points in their bid to avoid relegation to League Two.  They currently sit 21st in League One, which is the final of the four relegation spots and have 39 points to their name.  A win in this match would see them move up to 19th and a draw would be enough to move them up one place and out of the relegation zone.

Shrewsbury have promotion on their mind and they start the match in second place in League One.  Two teams win automatic promotion to the Championship and first placed Blackburn Rovers and third place Wigan are the other contenders.  A win for Shrewsbury would move them top of the table.

Northampton come into this match having lost 3-0 at home to Rotherham United in their previous match.  Rotherham are aiming for promotion this season, much like Shrewsbury and Northampton will be hoping to avoid another heavy defeat.

Form has been poor for Northampton and they have failed to win any of their previous five games in League One.  There have been three defeats and two draws and they have picked up just one win in their last eight games.

Trends show Northampton have lost three and drawn one of their last four home matches, scoring just one goal and conceding 6 in the process.

Shrewsbury are going well at the top end of League One and picked up a very good 2-1 win at Scunthorpe United on Saturday. Scunthorpe are in the mix for the playoff places, so this was always going to be a tough match.

Trends show Shrewsbury have won their last four matches in all competition, with three coming in League One and the other in the Football League Trophy.  Shrewsbury have reached the final of that tournament and could pick up some silverware this season.

You must go back to the home match against Rotherham United on the 17th February to find the last time Shrewsbury lost a match in League One and they have lost just three of their last seventeen games in the league.

Shrewsbury have won each of their last five away matches in League One and their away form is much better than their home form.

Team news and Northampton should have every player available for this game although some are at risk of suspension if they pick up a yellow card in this match including Matt Grimes and Chris Long.

Shrewsbury can also call upon their first choice XI for this match and it remains to be seen if Paul Hurst will rotate his squad following the match on Saturday.

Given the form of the two teams and Shrewsbury’s excellent recent away record, this one must go down as an away win as the Shrews continue their push for promotion this season.
