The Milan Derby

This weekend Serie A action will finish with one of the biggest matches in Italian and European football as AC Milan and Inter Milan meet at the San Siro.

The Milan derby is one of the most eagerly anticipated fixtures in the European football calendar and in addition to pride, there is a huge amount riding on this game.

AC Milan start the weekend in 7th place in Serie A with 44 points and depending on other results, a win could see them move up to 6th place and within 3 points of Roma and 4 points of Inter Milan.

As for the away team in this fixture, Inter Milan, a win for them could see them jump once place into third and extend their lead over their local rivals to 10 points.

AC Milan come into this match on a high having defeated Lazio on penalties in the Coppa Italia semi-final.  They will meet Juventus in the final and the result will have only added to their recent levels of confidence.

Trends show AC Milan have remained undefeated in their last eight Serie A matches and have won each of their last three. There have been wins over SPAL and Roma away from home and a 1-0 win over Sampdoria at the San Siro.

AC Milan have won five and drawn one of their last six home games in all competitions, including a 1-0 extra-time victory over Inter Milan in the Coppa Italia.  The Rossoneri have kept a clean sheet in five of those six games.

Inter Milan returned to winning ways at home to Benevento in Serie A last weekend, a match they were huge favourites to win.  The victory came after a disappointing 2-0 defeat at Genoa the week before and Inter Milan have been very inconsistent of late.

Trends show Inter Milan have lost only one of their last eight matches in Serie A, which was the defeat at Genoa.  However, they have won only two of their last eleven league games and this has been the big problem for a team who were hoping to challenge for the title.

So, despite having lost only one of their last eight league games, Inter Milan have drawn five of those matches and lost the other two.  Away from home, which is not 100% relevant to this fixture, Inter Milan have won just one of their last six Serie A games.

Inter Milan have scored 2 goals in their last five away league games.

Looking ahead to the team news and AC Milan can welcome back Andrea Conti but the full-back is not expected to start in this match.  Gennaro Gattuso may make a few changes to the team which won in mid-week to keep things fresh.

Inter Milan are also at full strength and rumours are Luciano Spalletti will select Roberto Gagliardini and Matias Vecino in midfield, keeping Borja Valero out of the starting XI.

This a massive game, which could develop into a cagey affair.  It would not be a surprise to see the game end level with under 2.5 goals scored.
