Salah Signs New Deal at Liverpool

There has been a lot of speculation over the future of Mohamed Salah in the last 12 months. Following the end of the 2021/22 season, which ended in disappointment for both Salah and Liverpool, the Egyptian forward had just one year left on his contract.

Salah wanted to stay at Anfield, that much seemed obvious but there was clearly an obstacle. As last season progressed, there were rumours of a deal on the table for Salah but the money being offered did not match the expectations of the former Chelsea man.

However, that changed in the past few days as it was announced Salah had signed a new three-year deal with Liverpool, with the contract reportedly worth more than £350,000-a-week. That makes Salah the highest paid player in the history of the club.

It is a bold step for Liverpool to give such a big contract to a player who is 30 years old. Speaking about the deal, Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp said, “It's the best decision for us and best decision for him. He belongs with us I think.

This is his club now,” before continuing, “This is a special treat for our supporters to enjoy their weekend even more. I'm sure there will be some celebrations for this news tonight.”

Salah has scored 156 goals in 254 appearances for Liverpool since making the move from Roma in 2017 for an initial fee £36.5 million. Salah has been a key player for Liverpool and has won the Premier League, Champions League, FA Cup, League Cup, FIFA Club World Cup and UEFA Super Cup with the club.

If we look at the statistics for the most goal involvements in the top five European leagues since Salah joined Liverpool, only Lionel Messi and Robert Lewandowski have more than Salah’s 164.

That breaks down to 118 goals and 46 assists. Messi leads the way with 200 goal involvements, breaking down into 131 goals and 69 assists, with Lewandowski on 184 goal involvements, including 161 goals.

Some have questioned the new contract considering Salah is now 30 years old but Messi and Lewandowski are 35 and 33 years old respectively and continued to deliver big numbers.

With Sadio Mane leaving Liverpool, Salah is now the main man in attack and he will relish the opportunity to become the greatest Liverpool player of all time.

However, there may be some Liverpool players looking at Salah’s deal and wondering about their own pay. Virgil van Dijk, Alisson, and Fabinho are three players in particular who may feel they deserve to be paid in the same bracket as Salah for their contribution to the team.

Trent Alexander-Arnold, Andrew Robertson, and Diogo Jota are other players who may be considering their own contracts in light of the new deal for Salah.

As for Salah, he will return for the 2022/23 season having had a full rest this summer and Egypt failed to qualify for the 2022 World Cup, meaning he will have winter break. We could be about to see Salah breaking new records for goal involvements in the Premier League next season.
