The race for automatic promotion in League Two is exciting. Three teams are battling for the title, as Mansfield, Stockport County, and Wrexham seek the League Two championship.
But the battle for the top three is close and dropped points could see one of those teams fall out of the top three this weekend.
League leaders Mansfield Town will host Colchester United, as they seek to remain unbeaten in head-to-head matches. Mansfield Town are unbeaten in six straight games versus Colchester United in all competitions. The teams drew 1-1 earlier this season.
Mansfield won their last two home matches against Colchester United by identical 2-1 scores. Town are top of the table, with 72 points from 38 games. They took 12 points from the last six games, scoring 16 goals and conceding eight.
Colchester took only four points from their last six matches. They are only outside of the relegation zone thanks to goal difference. A loss or draw and win for Forest Green Rovers would see United drop into the bottom two.
Big-money Wrexham will visit Grimsby Town. The Red Dragons are five points off first place Mansfield. However, they are only in the top three thanks to goal difference, as MK Dons are on their tails. Wrexham cruised to a 3-0 win at home in the reverse fixture.
Grimsby are battling against relegation to the National League. Six points separate Town from the drop. Grimsby’s form has improved this season, and they are unbeaten in their last six games. Town took 10 points from the last six games.
Wrexham are coming off a shock 1-0 loss at home to Tranmere Rovers. They are now winless in back-to-back League Two games. The Red Dragons have scored the third-most goals in the league, with 67.
It’s a top-four clash when Stockport County host Milton Keynes Dons. County are second in the league and Dons are fourth. Stockport went to the Stadium MK and won 2-1 earlier this season. Can they do the double?
County are in poor form. They failed to win five of their last six games. Each of Stockport’s last two matches ended in draws to Salford City and Crawley Town. County have scored the second most goals this season, with 70.
MK Dons won four of their last six league games. They are coming off a 3-1 win over Crewe last time out. Only 24 of MK Dons’ 67 points have come away from home this season.
Four of the last six matches between Crewe Alexandra and AFC Wimbledon in all competitions finished as draws. The reverse fixture saw the clubs play out a 2-2 draw in London.
Both clubs have their eyes on the promotion playoffs. Crewe are fifth in the league and Wimbledon are seventh. However, seven points separate the two teams. A Wimbledon win would pull them within four points of Crewe.
Crewe lost three of their last four matches. Nerves are jangling that the club won’t be able to hold onto a playoff place. Wimbledon, on the other hand, are unbeaten in four of their last five League Two games. However, they lost last time out 2-0 to Newport.
