The Swiss Super League moves into matchday No. 2 on Saturday with a full slate of games. FC Luzern and Grasshopper Club Zurich will both make their season debuts this weekend after not playing on opening day. Although just one match has been played, there is a lot to play for this weekend.
FC Zurich are the reigning Super League champions, but matchday No. 1 didn’t go to plan. The champions can be forgiven for having their eye on the Champions League qualifying round first leg a week ago. Unfortunately, Zurich lost their UCL first leg 3-2 to Qarabag in Azerbaijan.
FC Luzern is up next for Zurich. The away side did not play last weekend while Zurich lost 4-0 to the Young Boys. The last six games between Luzern and Zurich were split with three wins apiece.
St. Gallen host Winterthur on Saturday as they seek to strengthen their head-to-head record with the visitors. St. Gallen have a record of 3W-2D-1L in their last six games with Winterthur in all competitions.
Winterthur were promoted to the top flight after winning the Swiss Challenge League in 2021-22. They started the season with a surprise 1-1 draw with FC Basel.
St. Gallen began the campaign with a 1-0 loss to Servette. The home side finished fifth last season, just four points off of Europa Conference League qualification.
Grasshopper Club Zurch host FC Lugano on Sunday as the latter club aims to stay unbeaten versus the former. Lugano have a head-to-head record of 3W-3D-0L against Grasshopper in the last six meetings.
Lugano fell 3-2 to Sion on matchday No. 1. The team will be without left-back Fabio Daprela who is banned. He had a terrible day against FC Sion last weekend. Daprela scored an own goal and was sent off later on.
Grasshopper did not play on matchday No. 1. Expectations are low after an eighth-place finish last season. Grasshopper avoided the relegation playoffs by goal difference. The club’s ties with Wolverhampton Wanderers continue as three players have joined this summer from Wolves.
Young Boys started the Raphael Wicky era with a thumping of league champions FC Zurich 4-0. On Sunday, Young Boys will clash with FC Sion. Young Boys have a head-to-head record of 5W-0D-1L against Sion in their last six meetings.
Despite Young Boys commanding 4-0 win on matchday No. 1, they did not score the first goal until the 62nd minute mark. Young Boys have won four straight matches versus Sion.
FC Sion go into the weekend following a 3-2 away win against Lugano. The home side finished last season in seventh place in the 10-team league.
