So, after 38 Premier League games, the title came down to yesterday’s two games at Anfield and the Amex Stadium.

In the end, as expected Liverpool dispatched of Wolves 2-0 on home soil, while Manchester City recorded a comfortable 4-1 win to retain their top-flight crown.

City’s victory meant that Pep Guardiola’s team won the title by just a point, having accrued an incredible 98 points. Runners up Liverpool went into the history books becoming the runners-up with the highest points total (97) in the history of the English top-flight.

The fact that the Citizens have been able to retain the title against such a strong challenge from Liverpool just illustrates the sheer quality of Guardiola’s team. Despite a few near-fatal slip-ups at Christmas time, City have had the mental fortitude to record 14 straight top-flight wins to retain the title of Premier League champions.

City winning the title was even more impressive due to the fact that they played much of the campaign without Belgian playmaker Kevin de Bruyne because of injury. The former Chelsea man was key to last season’s title triumph. Guardiola’s team were also without the services of key defensive midfielder Fernandinho in many of the games in the second half of the campaign.

Some will say that City have strength-in-depth, but any team would miss such influential players as the midfield pair. One of Guardiola’s transfer priorities will be to attempt to replace the veteran Fernandinho this summer.

No doubt the Citizens will be back next season bigger and better. The Citizens will look to add the Champions League to their growing list of recent silverware.

However, Manchester City’s season is not yet finished, as the Citizens face Watford in the FA Cup final looking to do an unprecedented domestic treble. An unprecedented treble would be just sum up the current team, as they are truly special.
