SC Freiburg and West Ham United are locked on three points atop Group A ahead of their Europa League clash at the Europa-Park Stadion on Thursday.

Both sides won their opening match a fortnight ago, with Freiburg defeating Olympiacos 3-2 and West Ham beating Backa Topola 3-1.

The winner of Thursday’s showdown would take control of Group A, although a draw in Germany would throw the group wide open ahead of Matchday 3.

Freiburg head into Thursday’s clash on the back of a 2-0 victory over Augsburg, meaning they are unbeaten in three matches across all competitions.

After recording three wins, one draw and two losses in the league, Freiburg find themselves eighth in the Bundesliga table – six points shy of leaders Bayer Leverkusen.

When you look at the bigger picture, Freiburg have lost just two of their eight games across all competitions this term, picking up five wins and one draw.

It is also worth noting that Freiburg have kept four clean sheets in 2023-24, giving them a shutout ratio of 50%.

As for West Ham, they claimed a 2-0 victory over Sheffield United last time out, building on a 1-0 EFL Cup win against Lincoln City.

Thanks to a 3-1 victory over Backa Topola on Matchday 1 of the Europa League, the Hammers have won three of their previous four matches across all competitions.

Better still, David Moyes’ men have registered six victories in their last eight outings, scoring over 1.5 goals in five of those wins.

Sitting seventh in the Premier League after seven matches – five points behind leaders Manchester City – West Ham will be pleased with the start they have made.

Head-to-head: This is the first-ever meeting between Freiburg and West Ham, meaning there are no previous results to assess for this fixture.

Team news: Freiburg’s injury list contains Christian Gunter, Daniel-Kofi Kyereh, Max Rosenfelder and Benjamin Uphoff.

On the flip side, Jarrod Bowen and Aaron Creswell are doubts for Thursday’s clash, although both players could feature in Germany.

Both sides will be eager to maintain their unbeaten records in the Europa League, meaning we will likely see a tense and cagey affair in Germany.

Accordingly, Forebet predicts that Freiburg and West Ham will play out a low-scoring draw, with both teams netting under 1.5 goals.
