The first set of fixtures in the Champions League has passed us by in a flash with some memorable results across Europe’s elite competition. So, what did we learn from matchday one?

Bayern Munich are the real deal

Despite letting in three goals against Manchester United at home, Bayern Munich ran out 4-3 winners and managed to lead after just 25 minutes in the game.

Harry Kane was predictably amongst the goals in that match and he now heads into this one having scored five goals in five games.

By beating United on matchday one, Bayern Munich have put themselves top of the table, and in reality, it’s likely going to go on and win all six of its group games and head into the knockout stages as one of the favourites to win a seventh Champions League title.

Manchester City still the team to beat

Against the odds, the holders Manchester City found themselves 1-0 down in the first half against RB Salzburg.

However, as predicted, the treble winners from last season bounced back immediately in the second half, winning the game 3-1 in the end.

Ultimately, despite the class of Bayern at times on Wednesday and with the likes of Barcelona and Real Madrid winning, City are still going to be the team to beat this Champions League season.

    Keep an eye on Barcelona

Barcelona are the reigning champions of Spain after a sensational season last time out under Xavi. The club are currently trailing Real Madrid by one point, but they are heading to the weekend’s La Liga fixtures having smashed Royal Antwerp 5-0.

Joao Felix was at his very best that day, scoring twice and assisting another. The five goals Barcelona scored that day was also the second game in a row they have done so.

Ultimately, you don’t want to draw against the La Liga champions this time around, because they are looking very impressive.

    Arsenal could spring an upset

For the first time in five seasons, Arsenal are back in the Champions League and they returned with a sensational 4-0 win over PSV Eindhoven.

The Gunners scored twice inside the first 20 minutes against the in-form PSV, as Bukayo Saka and Leandro Trossard bagged a goal each.

Gabriel Jesus and Martin Odegaard added two more, and given how PSV had let in just one goal all season long before this, that win should prove what Arsenal are capable of.
