Sunday’s Carabao Cup final meant there were only eight Premier League games this weekend. However, it’s fair to say that there was no shortage of excitement in England’s top flight on Matchday 28.
Liverpool’s dreams of going the entire season unbeaten were crushed by Watford, while bottom club Norwich stunned Champions League hopefuls Leicester. Bournemouth claimed a vital point against Chelsea before Wolves got the better of Spurs in a five-goal thriller.
Let’s take a closer look at how the drama unfolded.
Norwich City 1-0 Leicester City
Brighton & Hove Albion 0-1 Crystal Palace
Bournemouth 2-2 Chelsea
Newcastle United 0-0 Burnley
West Ham United 3-1 Southampton
Watford 3-0 Liverpool
Everton 1-1 Manchester United
Tottenham Hotspur 2-3 Wolverhampton Wanderers
Norwich and Leicester kicked off the weekend’s Premier League action at Carrow Road and the Canaries claimed a vital three points thanks to Jamal Lewis’ fine strike from the edge of the area. Kelechi Iheanacho had a goal ruled out by VAR earlier in the game, so the Foxes have only managed to win one of their previous seven league matches.
Jordan Ayew scored the only goal of the game as Crystal Palace overcame Brighton. The Seagulls enjoyed 67% of the possession and notched up a total of 23 shots, but Roy Hodgson’s side eventually held on to the victory.
Chelsea came from behind to rescue a draw against Bournemouth in a topsy-turvy encounter on the south coast. Marcos Alonso put the blues ahead, but goals early in the second half from Jefferson Lerma and Joshua King turned the game in Bournemouth’s favour. However, Alonso got on the scoresheet again in the 85th minute snatch a share of the spoils.
Burnley were lucky to come away from St. James’ park with a point after Newcastle dominated but failed to find a way through. The Magpies created numerous goalscoring opportunities. But just as they have all season, Steve Bruce’s side lacked a cutting edge up front.
Jarrod Bowen scored on his first Premier League start as West Ham claimed a much-needed victory over Southampton. Micahel Obafemi equalised for Saints, but goals from Sebastien Haller and Michail Antonio sealed the win for the Hammers.
Watford netted three goals in 18 rampant second-half minutes to end Liverpool’s unbeaten run in the Premier League this season. Ismaila Sarr bagged a brace before Troy Deeney scored a third. The Hornets limited Liverpool to just one shot on target, while the champions elect were well off the pace.
Dominic Calvert-Lewin pounced on a David de Gea howler to give Everton the lead inside three minutes against Manchester United, but Bruno Fernandes levelled the score with a long-range effort. The Toffees thought they’d won it late on, but Gylfi Sigurdsson was ruled offside by VAR.
Wolves came from behind twice to eventually get the better of Tottenham. Steven Bergwijn put Spurs ahead, but Matt Doherty equalised. Serge Aurier then put Tottenham back in front just before half time, but Diogo Jota levelled midway through the second half. Raul Jimenez then scored the winner in the 73rd minute as Wolves moved above Spurs in the table.
