Liverpool recorded a 2-1 victory at Crystal Palace on Sunday in the Premier League to move within six points of the top-four. The game looked to be heading for a draw until the 96th minute when Belgian striker Christian Benteke was brought down in the penalty area and scored the resulting spot-kick.
The win made it two consecutive wins in the Premier League for Jurgen Klopp’s inconsistent side. The Reds are denied a chance to build on that win this weekend though, as due to the FA Cup quarter-finals the side from Merseyside do not have a game.
By the time the Reds play again in the top-flight, fourth-place Manchester City could have extended their lead over the Reds to nine points, although Klopp’s side will still have a game in-hand.
Liverpool have been a frustrating watch for their fans this season. One game they are superb the next awful. The two-game mini-run will have raised spirits amongst the Liverpool faithful, but Reds inconsistent performances earlier this season in an inconsistent league look set to rule them out of a top-four finish this season.
However, if they can enjoy a good run of form until the end of the season, then maybe they will be able to start next season in a far more confident manner. Boss Jurgen Klopp will no doubt not be happy with the way his side’s performances have varied in quality this season.
Klopp is likely to shake-up his squad in the summer and the Reds are likely to come back a different team next season.
