Away goal the key to Chelsea’s Champions League survival

Away goal the key to Chelsea’s Champions League survival

Chelsea were defeated 2-1 by French champions PSG in the Champions League last 16 first leg on Wednesday night. Uruguayan striker Edinson Cavani scored the winning goal on 78 minutes to give the Parisians a slight advantage for the second leg at Stamford Bridge.

However, the lead may not be enough for Laurent Blanc’s side to believe they are in the quarter-finals just yet, as John Obi Mikel’s strike for the Blues could be the whole key to the tie.

If Chelsea takes the lead in the second leg, then they have the experience and know-how to hang to it. Captain John Terry missed the first leg, but will likely be fit for the second leg and his presence in the Blues defence should help the Chelsea be more solid.

Chelsea seems to have a different mentality in the Champions League than the Premier League, no matter who their boss is, or the players in their team. The Blues current squad has remained largely the same over the past few seasons and no matter what is going on in the league they seem to up their game for the Champions League games.

These two teams met at this exact stage of the competition last season and PSG’s two away goals proved the decisive factor in the game. The first leg was drawn 1-1 at the Parc De Princes last year, so Chelsea are a goal down on last year, but that away goal has given the Blues hope that they can still make it past the French side and into the last eight of the competition.
