On Tuesday morning, Eintracht Frankfurt announced that current coach Adi Hutter will leave to club in the summer of 2021 for Borussia Monchengladbach.

The current Bundesliga campaign still has six games to go but teams are already positioning themselves for the new campaign.

The announcement of Hutter trading in Eintracht Frankfurt, who are on pace to qualify for the Champions League for the first-time ever, for a side that has struggled this term has taken some observers aback.

Borussia Monchengladbach announced the departure of current coach Marco Rose in February for Borussia Dortmund – who sacked Lucien Favre in December.

Current Borussia Dortmund interim coach Edin Terzic may have some admirers after leading the team to the Champions League quarterfinals. However, the Yellow and Black are also set to go in a different direction.

The summer of 2021 is likely to see a number of changes in the Bundesliga despite the ones already expected. Peter Bosz was sacked in March at Bayer Leverkusen after going 11 out of 14 league games without a win. Hannes Wolf has taken over as interim coach at the club.

Markus Gisdol was sacked as Koln coach on April 11 with the club in the bottom two. Friedhelm Funkel is now in charge of the Billy Goats on the pitch. If the ex-Fortuna Dusseldorf man can lead the team to safety, there is no guarantee he will be in the job next term.

Since the September 2020, there have been 12 coaching changes. Eintracht Frankfurt are yet to announce the replacement for Hutter, but he Eagles have two options in the hiring of a new coach: going for another unknown or a hiring someone with Champions League experience.

They could once again hire someone that is off the radar of most teams as they did with Hutter and current Monaco coach Niko Kovac, who preceded him. Kovac won the German Cup in his final year at Eintracht Frankfurt.

Hutter led the Eagles to the Europa League semifinals in his first campaign just a season after the team won the DFB Pokal. The exciting team lost on penalties to eventual champions Chelsea.

Hutter could bring Champions League football to Frankfurt for the first time with a team that has, in many ways, overachieved. But that is the key aspect of Hutter’s Frankfurt squads. They overachieve and play hard for one of the brightest managers in the Bundesliga.

His exit comes as a bit of a shock. The club are nearing Champions League qualification while Gladbach are four points back of an unlikely Europa League qualification place. Since news of Rose’s move to Borussia Dortmund was released, the Foals have nosedived.

Eintracht Frankfurt sporting directors Fredi Bobic and Bruno Hubner will leave the club in the summer. Bobic is set for Hertha Berlin, which is cited as one reason for Hutter’s departure.

The club are likely to promote Bobic’s right-hand-man, Ben Manga, a scout that has worked at the club for years as the new sporting director.

As the man that has identified many of Eintracht Frankfurt’s recent player successes, the club could be in store for more highs on the pitch.
