On Wednesday night, Lazio missed the chance to move into second in the Serie A table as the Eagles could only draw 0-0 against Verona.
Despite the draw, Simone Inzaghi and everybody connected with the club from the Italian capital will be delighted with how their Serie A campaign has gone so far.
The draw last time out still leaves Lazio just four points behind league leaders Juventus and very much in the race for the Scudetto. The driving force behind Lazio’s surprise title bid is Italian international Ciro Immobile.
The 29-year-old forward has scored an impressive 25 goals in just 22 appearances this season for his team. The former Dortmund star is currently seven goals clear of Juventus’ Portuguese superstar Cristiano Ronaldo in the race for the Serie A golden boot.
This season is far from a one-off for Immobile, though, as he has scored at least 15 league goals in his last four seasons with the high-flying Eagles.
In a title race, a goalscorer is vitally important. It is no coincidence that the three leading scorers are from the top three teams in the Italian top-flight.
Juventus and Inter are obviously still the two favourites to win the league. However, Immobile’s goals have at least given Inzaghi’s side hope of winning the Scudetto for just the third time in their history.
Even if Lazio do not end the season as Italian champions, then they are well positioned to clinch a lucrative Champions League spot for next season. That could mean the difference in keeping their top players or not.
On a personal level, the striker is now just four goals from matching his best ever goalscoring season, when he fired home 29 goals back in season 201/18. It seems unlikely that he will not match that tally during the current campaign, and in the process keep alive Lazio’s bid for the Scudetto.
