Liverpool: “We are going to win the league!”

As Liverpool walked off the Anfield pitch on Sunday evening following their 2-0 win over Manchester United, the Reds faithful sang out, “We are going to win the league.”

Sky Sports pundit and former Manchester United full-back Phil Neville claimed he had not heard that song in 30 years. It is true that song hasn’t rung out at Anfield in some time, but now, supporters are beginning to believe after three long decades without the league trophy, the wait is over.

Liverpool head into a midweek fixture against Wolverhampton Wanderers 16 points ahead of an inconsistent Manchester City. The Reds even have a game in hand and will play West Ham with the opportunity to move 19 points clear of second place.

How soon can Liverpool win their first ever Premier League title and first English title trophy in 30 years? The Reds can win the league on March 14th against Everton at Goodison Park as long as they keep winning.

While winning at Goodison Park would be great for most long-time Liverpool fans, many would prefer to win the trophy on April 4th. The Reds could lift the title at the Etihad Stadium against Manchester City in April if both teams continue winning matches until then.

Of course, Pep Guardiola’s team is struggling to stay consistent and keep pace with Liverpool. Manchester City demonstrated their inconsistencies once more at the weekend versus Crystal Palace. The Eagles scored a late equaliser courtesy of a Fernandinho own goal to claim a 2-2 draw.

If Liverpool are able to lift the league trophy against Everton or Manchester City, then they would break the record for winning the title earlier than any other league team. Which team holds the record for the earliest title win? Manchester United achieved the feat in 2000/01.

Liverpool were brilliant against Manchester United on Sunday cutting through the visitors’ defence like it was Swiss cheese. Although Manchester United had chances to score, the Reds’ defence held strong keeping a seventh straight Premier League clean sheet.

Alisson Becker made key saves and had the assist for Mohamed Salah’s goal in second-half stoppage-time to finally kill off the game.

Even with VAR going against Liverpool twice – once wrongly, once correctly – they were able to pick up the win. Not only did Liverpool win, they once again showed the gap between themselves and everyone else.

Liverpool need just 30 points to secure the Premier League trophy. That is 10 more wins from their next 16 matches. Of course, they could still capitulate and fail at the last hurdle. However, with the way Liverpool’s defence is playing and the attack is scoring, the wait for a league title could be over.
