Manchester United is, without doubt, one of the biggest football clubs in the world game. The club recently posted record financial returns off the pitch. However, on the pitch, things are a mess.

A 1-1 home draw against Arsenal on Monday night in the Premier League means that the Red Devils have taken just ten points from their first seven top-flight games. The tally is their lowest at this stage of a campaign in the Premier League era.

Some have questioned the ability of head coach Ole Gunnar Solskjaer. However, he is dealing with arguably the worse set of players in the club’s recent history.

The squad is made up of youngsters who are struggling to fulfil their potential and players who are nearly men when it comes to being top players. England international Jesse Lingard is a prime example.

He is now 26 years old, yet some are still waiting for the attacking midfielder to fulfil his potential. In previous eras it is likely he would have left United by now for a club with less lofty ambitions.

Then there is the supposed superstar Paul Pogba. The French midfielder blows hot and cold. On his day, he can be a highly influential figure from midfield. However, he has not had too many of those days this season. His mind seems to be elsewhere, with the possibility of a switch to Real Madrid may be distracting him from the job at hand.

Highly-rated young striker Marcus Rashford is struggling to live up to his hype, too. Against Arsenal the 21-year-old once again produced a poor display, missing some good chances, most notably late on.

All in all, most bosses would struggle to get the best out of this current squad of players. They of players are simply not living up to being Manchester United players, which is why the Red Devils are in such a poor position and will likely remain there for a long good while to come.
