Premier League campaign ends with final day drama

The Premier League season came to an end on Sunday afternoon with an incredible final day producing many winners and losers. Here are our winners and losers from Sunday’s action:

    Winners

The biggest winners of the day were Manchester City, who came back from two goals down to record a 3-2 win over Aston Villa. Three goals in five incredible second-half minutes, including an Ilkay Gundogan brace, were enough to give City a fourth league title in five seasons.

Leeds were the other big winners, as goals from Raphinha and Jack Harrison saw Jesse Marsch's team record a 2-1 win at Brentford to ensure the Whites will be playing Premier League football next season.

The final big winners of the day were Tottenham, who clinched the last Champions League spot with a 5-0 hammering of Norwich at Carrow Road. Antonio Conte’s team's fourth-place finish was made even sweeter because they beat arch-rivals Arsenal to the vital position.

    Losers

It would be harsh to call these teams losers, but they failed to achieve their objective on the campaign's final day. Despite a 3-1 home win over Wolves, Liverpool still finished second-place in the table, a point behind champions Manchester City.

The team that may be losing more than most is Burnley, who suffered a 2-1 home defeat by Newcastle, which led to the Clarets suffering relegation to the Championship. Mike Jackson’s team headed into gameweek 38 level on points with Leeds, but with vastly superior goal difference. Survival was in their own hands, but they couldn’t get the job done and will be playing in the second-tier next season.

The odds were always against Arsenal overthrowing Tottenham for fourth-place on matchday 38. However, the Gunners did their bit by recording a 5-1 home win over an under-strength Everton, who were already on the beach. It wasn’t enough for Mikel Arteta’s team to clinch fourth place.
