Liverpool may be realistic title contenders

As the dust settles on the weekend’s Premier League action and we head into the international break there is time to reflect on the recent goings on in the English top-flight.

One thing that has changed in recent weeks is the fact that Liverpool have suddenly found some consistent form. The Reds under German boss Jurgen Klopp had been highly inconsistent, both this season and last season.

However, Liverpool have now won their last five games in all competitions. At times playing ‘heavy-metal’ football, but on Sunday the Reds battled to a more hard-won 2-1 victory against Swansea at the Liberty Stadium.

A poor first half display was followed by a better second period. Roberto Firmino heading the Reds to parity before a late James Milner penalty secured maximum points for Klopp’s team. It was not pretty, but sometimes teams have to be able to battle as well as play to win titles.

Liverpool have been highly prolific in front of goal in those five wins, scoring 16 goals. The likes of Firmino, Milner, Adam Lallana, Philippe Coutinho and Sadio Mane have all been regulars on the scoresheet of late for the side from Merseyside.

The biggest concern for the Reds, who currently sit fourth in the table, is still their defence. The introduction of Cameroonian international Joel Matip has made the Reds looked slightly more solid in defence in recent games.

However, Klopp’s side have still looked vulnerable at the back. German goalkeeper Loris Karius has also made an unconvincing start to his Liverpool career so far. There are even suggestions from some fans that the German is no better than predecessor Simon Mignolet.

Liverpool have hit form in recent weeks, but there is a long way to go in the Premier League campaign. At the moment, though, they may have to be considered as realistic contenders for the Premier League title this season.
