Spanish giants not imperious anymore

    Spanish giants not imperious anymore

Spanish giants Barcelona and Real Madrid both failed to win their weekend games. It was not the first time this has happened this season, as both Spanish giants have already uncharacteristically dropped lots of points so far in the current campaign.

Real Madrid drew 1-1 with minnows Eibar at the Bernabeu on Sunday, while arch-rivals Barcelona suffered a 4-3 defeat at Celta Vigo, having been three goals down at half-time.

The results meant that Real Madrid have now drawn their last four games in all competitions, including their last three La Liga outings. Los Blancos have won just four of their seven La Liga games, drawing three times.

Barcelona’s record in the Spanish top-flight is even worse, as the Blaugrana have lost two of their seven La Liga games, drawing one and winning four times.

There is talk in Madrid that there is now a crisis at the club, which illustrates how everybody connected to Real are so unaccustomed to their side failing to win.

Barcelona boss Luis Enrique decided to rest a number of key players at Celta. The Spanish champions paid the price for a poor first display, although they did produce a more spirited second half display. However, that improved second-period performance was not enough to rescue anything from the game.

Both of Spanish football’s big boys have slipped up against teams considered inferior opposition this season. Real have drawn with Las Palmas and Eibar, while Barcelona have suffered defeats against Alaves and Celta.

The pair have dominated La Liga for a long time now, with only Atletico Madrid interrupting their La Liga title domination. Atletico and Sevilla have both made strong starts in La Liga, currently sitting top and third in the Spanish top-flight respectively.

It seems that the Spanish giant's struggles could present the likes of Atletico Madrid and Sevilla a golden opportunity to win a rare Spanish title.
