Portugal prove they are more than just a one man team

Portugal became European champions on Sunday night with a 1-0 victory over France in extra-time, as substitute Eder struck a fantastic effort from 25 yards out to score the only goal of the game.

The Selecao went into the clash as major underdogs and hoping that star player Cristiano Ronaldo would produce an inspiring display. It turned out that the Real Madrid forward would have a limited a highly limited impact on the game, as he was substituted after just 26 minutes through injury.

The former-Manchester United player attempted to carry following his injury on nine minutes, but eventually had to be replaced by Ricardo Quaresma.

His team went on to produce a disciplined and resilient display, even if it was lacking in attacking intent. The Portuguese did not have a shot on target until the 80th minute and goalkeeper Rui Patricio a record eight saves in a European Championship final.

Despite Fernando Santos’ team proved that they were more than just Ronaldo and ten others, by producing a gritty and good overall team performance. Football is a team game at the end of the day, but individual skill often decides games and it just happened to be a brilliant piece of skill from Eder that won the Selecao their first ever international title.

Boss Santos deserves immense credit, as he has not lost a competitive match managing Portugal and he has got a lot out of a group of players that were being called mediocre by some in the media.

France will be kicking themselves after a final that they dominated for long periods and did not win. However, Portugal have proven that they are much more than just a one man team and in the process played themselves into the history books.
