Gomez injury could cost Germany dearly at Euro 2016

Gomez injury could cost Germany dearly at Euro 2016

Germany may have won their Euro 2016 quarter-final clash with Italy on Saturday night, but the win was negated by the fact that Die Mannschaft lost both central midfielder Sami Khedira and striker Mario Gomez, who went off injured during the clash with the Azzurri.

The pair have now been ruled out of the remainder of the competition, which is a huge blow to the world champions. Joachim Low’s team does have a relative strength in-depth in most areas and can cover Khedira’s injury. However, Mario Gomez is the only out-and-out striker in their squad.

The 30-year-old started the campaign on the bench, with Mario Gotze playing as a false number nine, but Low saw that the system simply was not working out. The German boss then turned to the only real striking option he had available, Gomez.

The former-Stuttgart had struggled for form and fitness, missing the 2014 World Cup through injury. Last season he was sent out on-loan to Besiktas, where he won the Turkish top-flight title and top the scoring charts with 26 goals.

His impressive form in Turkey lead to him earning a recall to the German squad at the end of 2015, but there were still doubts over his ability to lead the German line. Those doubts were somewhat dismissed by two goals in two games against Northern Ireland and Slovakia.

He looked sharp and he was a proper focal point of the team, even if he is not the most subtle of strikers. Gomez’s physical presence made Germany a better team and he will be missed.

Gomez’s injury represents a really big problem for Low and the German boss must figure out a solution with a semi-final clash with hosts France on Thursday night.
