England’s search for a new boss may lead to the Three Lions being managed by a foreign boss once again, with the number of eligible English bosses small in number.
England suffered one of their most humiliating defeats in international football on Monday night as they suffered a 2-1 defeat against minnows Iceland in the last-16 of Euro 2016.
The defeat lead to boss Roy Hodgson quitting his role, which was hardly surprisingly considering the Thee Lions poor display in France this summer. The FA are now on the hunt for a replacement, with under-21 boss Gareth Southgate mooted as a temporary solution.
The search for a permanent boss may take a while though, as there is no obvious replacement for the experienced Hodgson. Southgate has been talked about as a possible permanent replacement for Hodgson, but he would be an unpopular appointment.
A dearth of English bosses means that England may decide to appoint a foreign boss for only the third time in the country’s footballing history. A number of foreign bosses have been talked about as potential successors for Hodgson, including Claudio Ranieri, Arsene Wenger, Filipe Scolari and Laurent Blanc.
It seems unlikely that most England fans would care if the next national team boss was foreign or home grown as long as the next boss improves the fortunes of the team. At the moment English football is at a low ebb following the team’s inept performances at Euro 2016.
The England national team teams needs a strong character to help the players overcome what seems to be a psychological block at international tournament. If England do not get the right replacement for Hodgson then it could take the Three Lions a long time to be a force in international football.
