On Wednesday night, two of the best teams in European football went head-to-head, as Manchester City hosted PSG at the Etihad Stadium. The pair are two of the favourites to lift the Champions League trophy, with teams packed full of stars.

The English champions eventually prevailed 2-1 after controlling large periods of the game. In fact, the first half was all City, with PSG struggling to get a foothold in the game.

Pep Guardiola’s team failed to score and were hit on the counter-attack early in the second half, as Kylian Mbappe fired home.

For a small amount of time after the goal, the Parisians looked dangerous. However, City equalised through Raheem Sterling and found a winner through Gabriel Jesus with 14 minutes left on the clock.

The English champions looked a cut above their star-studded opponents at times on Wednesday night.

The most impressive factor of the win was the fact that the Citizens recorded this victory without the services of three of their best-attacking players in Kevin de Bruyne, Phil Foden and Jack Grealish, who all missed out through injury and fitness problems.

For any team to have the sort of depth to be able to cope without the services of three such key players shows that they can take on anybody.

Critics will harp on about the money they have spent, and they have spent big in the transfer market in the last decade.

However, the fact that they can come out on top with an under-strength attack is all down to the players being able to carry out Pep Guardiola’s instructions to the tee and get the job done.

The win was against one of the most star-studded teams in the league. There are very few teams with the quality to stop City this season in the Champions League if any.
